Amansara
5 stars
Fr £1,344 per room night
General
The Amansara, former guesthouse of King Sihanouk, is set in a charming garden compound on the edge of Siem Reap, Cambodia. Just 10 minutes from the entrance to the World Heritage Site of Angkor, the Amansara is the ideal base from which to explore the Khmer culture and the ruins of Angkor, and enjoy a range of Cambodian temple excursions and cultural walks.
Spa
Overlooking a garden featuring an ancient rain tree, the spa is the perfect place to unwind after a day exploring Cambodia’s cultural sites. The four treatment rooms each come with an attached relaxation area, private steam bath and shower and views of a reflection pond, while the extensive range of massage and beauty treatments combine traditional Khmer techniques with Amansara’s own natural spa product range.
Room Description
Built by the French architect Laurent Mondet as guest accommodation for King Sihanouk, it was reconstructed as the luxurious 24-suite hotel it is now. Each suite has an open-plan design, with finishes in terrazzo and timber, as well as its own outdoor courtyard. Decor is cool and neutral, and the combine sleeping and living areas have a large writing desk, and a king-size bed, with an adjacent dressing area, a large sofa, and informal dining table and chairs. Leading down a few steps is the bathroom, with floor-to-ceiling glass doors opening out on to a pretty light-filled garden with a cushioned banquette to relax on. The fabulous bathrooms have a large soaking tub, separate shower and twin vanities with mirrors. All the suites are equipped with ceiling fans, teleohone, room safe, music system, Wi-Fi, mini bar and air conditioning. The Pool Suites also have private plunge pools.
Activities
The Amansara has two large swimming pools, the 17-metre curved pool overlooked by a cushioned alcove and sun loungers, while the other is a 25m lap pool, tucked away behind a six-metre high wall. The roof terrace offers a quiet peaceful space for early or late evening drinks and private dinners, as well as yoga and contemplation at sunrise. The Library has a range of coffee-table books, trvel guides, board games and reference books on the Angkor temples, while the Gallery has a range of handwoven silks, jewellery and other souvenirs.
The spa has four treatment rooms, which overlook a reflection pond, where you can indulge in a range of treatments using Cambodian techniques and the Aman’s own product range. And that’s just the resort. Further afield, there are all kinds of different excursions and tours on offer, from tours of the Cambodian temples around Angkor Wat, including the abandoned monasteries of Ta Probhm and Preah Khan, and the 12th century monument of Banteay Kdei.
Dining
The circular Dining Room, with its soaring 7m high ceiling and shaded terrace, is near the main swimming pool, and offers a traditional Khmer and Western menu. The dining area also has a walk-in wine and cheese cellar for guests to choose from and a casual lounging area where you can help yourself to homemade cakes… to avoid temptation, you can also choose to dine in your own suite, or beside the pool.
