Small and perfectly formed, the Regency-style Islington Hotel was built in 1847 at this exclusive location in Hobart, which has been named one of the top ten best cities in the world. It was converted to a hotel in the 1980s, and in its present luxury-driven incarnation it provides a serene space for guests, packed with antiques and fine art. Its lovely landscaped garden, with views over Mount Wellington, provides a tranquil refuge in this bustling city.

Room Description

Thoughtful touches in the 11 individually themed rooms include marble bathrooms with deep baths and rain showers, complimentary minibars, specially designed king-size beds, in-room iPad, free wifi, HD TV, quality tea and coffee, air-conditioning and underfloor heating. The two garden rooms have French doors opening onto a flagstone terrace that leads to the garden, while the courtyard room has its own private verandah and courtyard. Largest of all is the Biedermeier-themed signature room, which takes up a corner of the house and features a large Austro-Hungarian Empire bed.

Activities

You can settle down with a book in one of the hotel’s many sitting rooms, or hang out in the garden or glass pavilion, which overlooks the pond. But it’s worth tearing yourself away to take in the cafés, bars and restaurants of the lively waterfront area. Other local attractions include MONA (Museum of Old and New Art), Coal Valley wineries and Salamanca outdoor market. You can also arrange to take a cruise to Bruny Island National Park, or visit Port Arthur historical site or Wine Glass Bay.

Dining

You’ll be well fed and watered as the hotel has a pleasing restaurant in the conservatory, as well as a well-stocked wine cellar. The daily-changing seasonal menus feature such local delights as smoked eel, braised wallaby shank and Bruny Island oysters.
