Galley Bay Resort & Spa is an award-winning tropical idyll for those wishing to unwind and enjoy an all-inclusive service. The 4-star resort covers 40 acres right on the waterfront on the east side of Antigua, just 20 minutes from the airport. The island’s capital, St John’s, is just a short ride away.

Adjacent to the calming water you’ll find the resort’s Indulge spa, which makes use of natural, rustic materials and has a number of treatment areas, including open-air ‘pods’, one of which offers a his-and-hers option. You can relax in the spa pool and decked area or treat yourself to one of the many treatments and massages available, using Pevonia Botanica skincare products, or simply have your hair done. You can also choose to have a treatment in your own room, if you prefer. There’s also a fully equipped fitness centre, with chilled water and towels provided.

The resort boasts 98 guest rooms, many in typical Caribbean style, others more modern, but all stylish and benefiting from top-quality amenities such as a private terrace or patio, air-conditioning, well-stocked fridge, TV and coffee machine. You can choose from single-storey Beachfront Rooms, Premium Beachfront Suites – featuring sunken living areas, and his and hers showers and double sinks in the bathrooms – or the Tahitian-themed Gauguin Cottages. The latter comprise twin ‘rondoval’ cottages and have bags of character, from the thatched roofs and round walls to the outdoor private pools.

You may choose simply to lie back and enjoy the spectacular views and the peace and quiet at this tropical paradise, which is a natural sanctuary for the island’s bird life = from pelicans and herons to frigate birds. But if you’re looking for something more active, there’s plenty to keep you occupied, from swimming and snorkelling, sailing, kayaking, paddle boarding and windsurfing – lessons and equipment for non-motorised watersports are complimentary – to cycling, tennis, table tennis, croquet and the game of horseshoes. You can also arrange an excursion outside the resort – anything from Extreme Circumnavigation or a Caribbean Helicopter Montserrat Tour to a visit to Stingray City or a Rainforest Canopy Tour.

You can choose from three al fresco restaurants – Sea Grape, Gauguin and Ismay’s – which combine Caribbean and continental cuisine, using produce from the on-site vegetable garden. All are under the care of executive chef Andrew ‘Stan’ Baxter. There’s also the Barefoot Grill for poolside lunches and snacks, and a number of bars and lounges. If you’re feeling romantic, you can arrange to have an intimate meal on the beach, served by your own private waiter. Or, why not organise a Pinchin Bay picnic – after a short boat ride you’ll be left on a remote beach alone for four hours with nothing but a champagne lunch.
